What is a parent to do?
In 2007, two advisory committees recommended to the FDA that the active ingredients in OTC cough and cold medications be withdrawn from use for children under 6. They were cited as being especially problematic for children under the age of 2, as it can be difficult to dose these medications precisely. Deaths of some infants have been attributed to too high dosages of OTC medications.
In October of 2007, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association issued a voluntary withdrawal of cough and cold medications for infants.
So now what is a parent to do?
First of all, when your child is sick, it is important to remember that a cold will run its course. So your child will most likely be feeling much better within a week's time.
Be sure your child gets plenty of fluids. And a saline solution can help keep the nasal membranes moist. Put a few drops of saline in each of your child' nostrils and remove the fluid with a nasal aspirator.
OCEAN for Kids® is a non-medicated saline nasal spray that is safe for frequent daily use.
