The relative humidity in commercial aircraft is typically very low. The cabin is also circulated with a combination of fresh and recycled air, which can adversely affect air quality and lead to congestion or a dry, irritated nose. In addition to causing discomfort during the flight, this may also increase the chances of developing a respiratory infection.
The tight quarters of an aircraft cabin can present travelers with intense exposures to environmental allergens. This can be a problem for those bothered by pet dander (on the clothing of pet owners) and irritants such as strong perfumes and tobacco odors from passengers in proximity. Such irritation can cause inflammation of the lining of the nose and sinuses.
The confined passenger space of the plane can lead to the spread of contagious respiratory infections. In such close quarters it can be difficult to avoid exposures to respiratory infections. Frequent hand washing and wearing a mask may help. However a mask can be uncomfortable, inconvenient, and socially awkward.
