ThyroShield® Potassium Iodide Oral Solution
FAQs

Q. What is ThyroShield® Potassium Iodide Oral Solution?

A. ThyroShield® is 65 mg of potassium iodide (KI) per mL, in a black raspberry-flavored oral solution. When taken within hours of exposure, ThyroShield blocks the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine.

Q. What does ThyroShield® do, and how does it work?

A. When taken within hours of exposure, ThyroShield® blocks the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine. If the thyroid is not protected, exposure may eventually cause thyroid cancer. ThyroShield® is not a general protective agent.

Q. How can I be exposed to radioactive iodine?

A. You may be exposed from the fallout or plume that is created from a nuclear accident within a nuclear reactor (found in nuclear power plants) or from the detonation of a nuclear bomb containing radioactive iodine.

Q. What’s the difference between a potassium iodide oral solution and a tablet?

A. There are several differences. Perhaps the most critical difference is that
ThyroShield® is the only oral solution that is emergency ready for infants to adults. That means it may be taken quickly if an emergency arises. Potassium iodide tablets may require crushing and mixing into a liquid to make it taste better or to make it easier to swallow, depending upon the individual’s age.

Q. Are any of the FDA-approved potassium iodide tablets flavored?
A. Only
ThyroShield® is flavored to make it more palatable. ThyroShield® is a black raspberry-flavored oral solution. The FDA reports that raspberry flavoring masks the bitter taste of potassium iodide the best. *

Q. How will I know when I need to take
ThyroShield®?
A. Government or emergency management officials will direct people on when and for how long they need to take a potassium iodide protectant.

Q. Where should I store
ThyroShield®?
A. We recommend keeping
ThyroShield® anywhere you and your family spend a lot of time, including your home, vehicle, day care, schools, grandparents' homes, etc.

Q. How do I buy
ThyroShield®?
A.
ThyroShield® is available to individual families by asking their local pharmacists to order ThyroShield for them. ThyroShield® is also available online at NukePills.com or drugstore.com.

Q. Who makes
ThyroShield®?
A.
ThyroShield® is manufactured in the U.S. to exacting pharmaceutical standards by Fleming Pharmaceuticals, headquartered in St. Louis County, Missouri. Fleming has manufactured prescription and over-the-counter products, including OCEAN® Premium Saline Nasal Spray, for more than 40 years.
